Scott & Dave

Scott Shute and Dave Hughes have been friends for years, but never compatible musically. This lack of compatibility was seen as an opportunity.   The question: What would happen if these two incompatible, passionate musicians got together and made music? This was very much in need of an answer, as both Dave & Scott were interested in making something they've never heard before. At the time, Dave, was still stuck on the redundant delay guitar-driven crescendo rock sound, while Scott worked alone in his trailer on his sound (rather dissonant forms of thrash, hip-hop, and "liquid nightmares" (you're welcome) )

In 2002, they began to work together in studying odd meters, their one common interest. With Scott on drums, and Dave on bass, they'd play in 5/4, 7/8, 9/8...until they became very comfortable. Then they'd switch seats and do it all over again. It looked as if a math rock band was about to form (thankfully this was not the case). This "studying" pushed both of them to not only understand irregular meters, but also to learn each other's first instrument much better, thus creating an understanding of the counterpart's abilities and limits. This understanding, needless to say, fueled the compatibility and they began work on their first EP.

From early 2003 through summer of 2004, Dave and Scott created their first EP. While some predictable elements showed itself in the finished work, they were both very surprised by the overall sound. It wound up being pretty folksy with minimal doses of rock, groove, noise, polite irregular meters, crescendo, heckling, ebow, mandolin, dismay, frogs, phone calls...but mostly folk music...I guess...you decide.
